- Chinese Cabbage
- Here is a variety which makes the production of good solid heads of crunchy Chinese cabbage so much easier. In recent trials it has shown a good resistance to both disease and bolting (running to seed). The medium sized cylindrical heads have very little internal stalk and can weigh up to 4.4lbs in weight. Plus on maturity they don't lose their eating quality quickly but will stay in good condition for up to a month.
Type/hardiness: Trailer
- Sowing:
- Sow from late spring to mid/late summer for late summer to fall production. Sow ¼ inch deep in a good seed compost. Germination takes 4-14 days at 70-75F.
They can also be sown direct in early summer in drills ½ inch deep, 12 inches apart, spacing the seeds 1 inch apart in the drill. Thin out when large enough to handle. In hot weather, water the drills well before sowing.
- Growing:
- Transplant the seedlings carefully when large enough to handle, into boxes. Gradually acclimatize to outdoor conditions and plant out 12 inches apart in rows 18 inches apart.
- Aftercare:
- They prefer a reasonably rich, moist soil in sun or a little light shade. Water the plants well until they become established and also in dry weather.
