- Watermelon Charleston Gray
- This old favorite produces fruits up to 2 feet long and weigh up to 35lbs. Gray-green rind with succulently crisp red fiberless flesh. Resistant to fusarium wilt and anthracnose. Suitable for growing outdoors.
Type/hardiness: Vegetable; Cropping in 85 Days
- Sowing:
- Sow indoors 4 weeks before last frost or outdoors after last frost when soil has warmed to 70F or warmer. Sow ½in deep, in 3½ inch pots of free-draining seed sowing mix. Place in a propagator and keep at a temperature of around 68-77F until after germination, usually 5-7 days.
- Growing:
- When first true leaves develop, transplant into 5 inch pots for a few weeks. Warm the soil outdoors by covering with plastic mulch for 3-4 weeks before planting. After risk of frost, plant out 24 inches apart.
- Aftercare:
- Water regularly and feed with liquid fertilizer every 14 days. Pinch out growing point at the 4 leaf stage and train the laterals (sideshoots) along the row. Hand pollinate if required.
Prefers a sheltered site and rich, well-drained soil.
