- Day Flower Mixed
- A mixture of the species from Mexico with either white or shades of blue, ½in flowers. May need protection in the winter, or simply dig up the tubers and store them - just like Dahlias!
Height: 20 inches; Type/hardiness: Half-hardy Herbaceous Perennial; Flowers: Summer
- Sowing:
- Sow 1/16 inch deep in good seed sowing compost from late winter to mid spring. Germination can take 1-3 months at 60-65F. After sowing seal the seed container inside a polythene bag to ensure that the compost stays moist but never saturated. After germination lower the temperature to 60F.
- Growing:
- When large enough to handle transplant the seedlings to 3 inch pots. Later, harden off and plant out, when all risk of frost has passed, 12 inches apart in full sun. Prefers a moist, well drained soil. In early fall, lift the tubers and store dry and frost free like Dahlias. The seeds can also be sown in the fall in a greenhouse and over-wintered. This makes better sized plants for planting out the next spring. The young seedlings usually die back as winter sets in and re-emerge in the early spring.
